Albert,
Please keep in mind the following points:
1. Referencing to my earlier mail messages, the portakamps cannot be used as storage for cables. Dates were supplied in earlier mail as to when these trailers need to be emptied out in preparation for moving to the railhead or scrapped based on their condition.
2. The blocks cannot be moved until sometime after the shutdown has begun. This date is not known at this time. When the blocks are moved new fall protection concerns will have to be addressed. It is only at this time that we will then know how cables are to be removed safely should it be determined that they be salvaged. Another possibility is that moving the blocks may be part of the demolition package. If so, it may be difficult to salvage the cables.
3. Traing of personnel to remove the cables is also a very important matter to be addressed prior to removal of cables should they be salvaged.

Bill,
I talked some with Carlos Hojvat. It seems the cables are Class 1
at the accelerator end. I believe that means we would like to save
the ribbons. Frank Turkot suggests we store them in the Purdue
trailer at the C-zero site and let the radioactivity cool a while
there. Actually, we need to see how long it takes copper to cool.
If it does turn out the radioactivity will be benign in a year,
we must consider how to remove the cables. Unless the concrete
blocks come out first, I don't think we can remove the cables
without enormous expense and difficulty, so we would just give up
on the salvage job. If the blocks are out of the way or pulled back,
I think we can cut the cable ties and let the cables drop freely
to the floor. In several hours we should be able to extract them
and hoist them out with a sling if there is a hoist available.
I must now find Laszlo Gutay and discuss this with him.
