Chamber report

After the access today I tried running up the voltage on all chambers.
(This is safe to do even with the Michigan electronics not installed
because the Michigan mother boards have protection diodes which keep the
wires at ground potential.) All chambers seem to hold their nominal
operating voltage with one exception, chamber 105 (as bj reported
earlier, he had observed a problem with this chamber). Chamber 105 has
been operated at 2900 volts in the past but is now drawing current in an
unstable way at 2800 volts. It is O.K. at 2750 volts. I recommend that
we try operating it at 2750 volts initially and measure the efficiency
(this is a Nanometrics chamber). If it is unacceptably low, we can try
increasing the voltage until the efficiency is O.K. or the chamber
fries. We do have a spare chamber but installing it would require more
access time than we are likely to have. Stay tuned.
