VMS Migration Schedule

As was announced in the May 1995 newsletter and reinforced in the September
1995 newsletter, the direction for computing at Fermilab is toward the UNIX
operating system and personal computers running MacOS, Windows, and Windows
NT, and a phase-out of support for the VMS operating system.

Although UNIX systems have provided the predominance of the computing CPU
cycles at the lab for some time, certain issues remained to be resolved in
order to support large numbers of VMS users moving to UNIX. Some of these
issues related to availability of information and training. Other issues
related to the availability of tools on UNIX systems that VMS users were
used to relying on. Articles in this newsletter outline status on these
and other areas.

The VMS Migration Task Force has concluded that considerable progress has
been made and it is now time to set specific target dates for user
migration from FNALV. These specific dates should help you in your
planning process. Also, the Task Force will probably discover additional
migration issues in this process.

July 1, 1996. All user accounts will be turned off except for those whose
request for extension has been approved.

October 1, 1996. Only a small number of users remain on the system
performing specific approved tasks.

As this process unfolds, the FNALV cluster will be downsized and its
support will be significantly reduced.

In order to use FNALV beyond July 1, you will need to turn in a FNALV Usage
Extension Form by January 31, 1996. On that form you will be asked to
explain why you will not be able to migrate off FNALV by July 1, 1996 and
your expected migration schedule. In most cases, we will need to talk to
you in person to understand the details of your schedule. You will be
notified of the status of your request.

The Usage Extension Form is available in the Computing Division Library,
Wilson Hall 8 NE, from the newsgroup fnal.forms, and from the VMS Migration
Web pages
